A off-road bike journey to discover the secret heart of Estonia
Among the reasons why I decided to move to Estonia, together with my partner Ulla (who is from here) there was the curiosity of discovering a still not so much known country, its culture, language, definitely its climate and nature.
Well, winter was long, cold and white, done of successful and less successful days, broken tyres and metal studs, hoping for some grip on the snow.
One of the biggest desires we had was the ultimate adventure: cross diagonally the country along the Oandu-Ikla trail.
I built the bikes and Ulla did the majority of the reading, as well because almost all infos are in Estonian, and my understanding of the language is very very basic.
The rest of the route planning was done during the night, in front of the fire, preparing for the day ahead, checking for water and shops where to get some food to grill the next night.
So built our “custom horses”:
We went out to live the adventure
…met a lot of new friends:
..and some less friendly ones
But we loved every minute – every hard muddy or dry sandy bit of it!
